Finding products that sell on TikTok: a 4-step hit-product testing process

When you sell products on TikTok, the first question is always: which product will sell? Rather than choosing on instinct, we find out through testing. Here is the 4-step hit-product testing process we use in real client projects.

Step 1: Understand the local market

The first task is to understand the target market's audiences and culture.

  • Audience preferences: what kind of content resonates with Gen Z, the core of TikTok in Japan?
  • Cultural context: even for the same product, the selling points that land differ by market

The starting point is not to import a sales playbook proven in China as-is, but to translate it into the context of everyday life in Japan.

Step 2: Find the right creators

Using tools such as TikTok Creator Marketplace, we look for creators with strong affinity to the product. What matters is not follower count but how well the followers' profile matches the product category. Niche, vertically focused creators can deliver high conversion rates even with smaller followings.

Step 3: Validate the creative

From the content published, we identify promising assets against three metrics.

  1. Click-through rate (CTR): are the thumbnail and hook working?
  2. 3-second view-through rate: are viewers dropping off in the opening?
  3. Engagement rate: saves, comments, and shares are signals of purchase intent

Only assets that clear all three metrics move on to the next step.

Step 4: Amplify with ads

Work with strong creators, produce strong seeding assets, then amplify them with ads — this order matters.

Organic reach for a TikTok video peaks 2–3 days after publication and declines from there. Paid traffic does not cannibalize organic traffic; it acts as an amplifier that extends the peak. Budget should be concentrated on the assets that testing has proven to win.

We run this 4-step testing process as part of an end-to-end program combining store management, live commerce, creator campaigns, and ad operations. If you are considering launching products on TikTok, we would be glad to talk.
